The Northwood and NYSEF Relationship

Northwood School is an internationally recognized private boarding and day school located in Lake Placid, New York, providing a full-term academic experience with year-round training, on and off-snow. Founded in 1905, Northwood is among the nation's top private schools for excellence in academics and athletics.

Northwood and NYSEF have a long-standing relationship. Together, student-athletes train and compete in the Olympic region within the NYSEF program pursuing academic options at Northwood. In the off-season, training is integrated into the co-curricular schedule to ensure athletes enter the season with the strength and confidence to compete at the highest level.

Olympic Experienced Leadership

Northwood's Director of Skiing, Tommy Biesemeyer, joined Northwood after a storied 12 year professional racing career, highlighted by representing Team USA at the 2018 Olympics. A resident of Keene, New York, and known within the ski community as "B.Z.," Biesemeyer began skiing at the age of three and had his first race at age seven when he joined the NYSEF program. At 12, Biesemeyer competed in J3 and J4 races but always had sights set on the U.S. Ski Team. A victory at the '03 Junior Olympics started him down that path, and he then made his World Cup debut in 2010 and the Olympic Team in 2018.

Academic Excellence

Academically, Northwood students engage with a rigorous college preparatory curriculum while also engaging in intensive, hands-on learning experiences focusing on STEM, innovation, and experiential, real-world learning opportunities grounded in relationships. The staff at Northwood work closely with our student-athletes to help balance their ski/ride career and academic success. NYSEF coaches help athletes cultivate their potential during a race or in a competition, while teachers help to support their academic progress during training camps and throughout the competitive season.

Socially and Culturally Diverse

Northwood’s diverse student body consists of 190 students from every region of the United States and 25+ countries, bringing rich perspectives. Socially and culturally, students feel pride in contributing to and persevering on multicultural teams while being supported by a group of caring professionals (teachers, coaches, and advisors) that customize for students' strengths, needs, and interests.

At Northwood School, skiers enjoy a demanding training environment that is also fun, inclusive, and supportive. For more information visit
