Executive Director/ Alpine Program Director
John grew up ski racing in the NYSEF program. Starting at age 10 in the alpine program at Gore Mountain, he attended Northwood School and skied in the Whiteface program for his final two years of high school. He then looked to the Green Mountains of Vermont where he attended Saint Michael's College for 4 years (where he also began his coaching career). Upon graduating he returned back to Lake Placid to begin coaching junior FIS women.
John has been coaching at NYSEF since 2002 (apart from a stint at GMVS as a women's coach). He has served as alpine program director since 2010. He began his new role in May 2016, following the retirement of Jay Rand, who held the executive director position since 2009.
John has earned several United States Ski & Snowboard Association certifications including Level 3 Referee, Level 3 Chief of Race, Level 3 Chief of Course, and Level 3 Competition. He is also a certified Level 300 coach.
Director of Communications and Development
Becky Northrup is our new Director of Communications and Development. Becky moved to the Adirondacks after graduating from college to see what it was like for a year, tops. That was many, many years ago. Prior to joining NYSEF, Becky was the Senior Director of Digital Marketing and Creative at Workshop (formerly Adworkshop), a digital marketing firm with offices in Lake Placid and Saratoga Springs, where she oversaw creative direction for client campaigns, managed staff, and led copywriting for the agency.
Becky and her husband Tim, a partner at Northwoods Engineering in Saranac Lake, live in Wilmington with their two boys. They’re avid adventurers and enjoy exploring the Adirondacks and everywhere else.
Meet Tiffany Van Etten, our new Special Events Coordinator and Administrative Assistant at NYSEF! Tiffany and her husband, Peter relocated to the Adirondacks in 2016 to raise their family in an area they fell in love with - offering new and exciting opportunities for her children, Cole and Keely. She lives in Saranac Lake and has worked in the insurance industry for the last 30 years (volunteering with NYSEF for the last 3 years)! Both Cole and Keely are involved in the Alpine programs at NYSEF.
She serves on the Saranac Lake Free Library board and the newly formed Saranac Lake Innovative Cycling Kids (SLICK) board - her son Cole is one of the founding members along with several other NYSEF athletes. SLICK's goal is to build a Bike Park/Pump Track in Saranac Lake. When Tiffany is not reading, biking or supporting NYSEF, she is outdoors on the trails with her family and dogs, Shelby and Raya. Welcome, Tiffany!
Belleayre Mountain Staff
Head Alpine U14 Coach
FULL NAME: Kevin Vanblarcum
HOMETOWN: Shandaken , NY
Job title at NYSEF: Head U14 Coach NYSEF Belleayre
Additional job, not at NYSEF: brewer for Westkill brewery, deputy supervisor town of Shandaken and author.
Did you ski race, if so, where/when/why? I grew up skiing at Belleayre. My sister and I were on skis as soon as we could walk, and I think it was pretty much game over after that. I raced through high school and skied USSA for Belleayre until I was 16 before focusing on freestyle for a few years.
What motivated you to start coaching? I quit my job in 2013 and was trying to focus on things that made me happy. Skiing was it. I got a job coaching soccer for the local high school and applied to coach at Belleayre with current director, Jim Catalano. We talked for a while and I ended up working every day that season on snow. I couldn’t have told you that it would turn into a 7 year career– coaching in three different sports, but that’s life. I truly love it.
What do you like/love most about snowsports? The Snowsport culture? I think the culture is what I love most about snow sports. It’s bonding over a mutual love of waking up early and going outside to play in the snow. It’s people from all these different walks of life who get to the mountain early trying to get first chair, and hang out in the lodge to share how awesome their day was. As a kid who grew up skiing at Belleayre, I’ve always described it as family.
What do you like to do in the off season? During your free time? What hobbies do you have? I’m lucky enough to have most of my hobbies as jobs, brewing, writing, and skiing. In the off-season I try to get outdoors as much as I can. Whether that’s reading by the creek or skating around the reservoir. I also like archery. Particularly traditional re-curve. That’s kind of my off-season therapy. We have a range at the brewery so I shoot most days.
How do you feel connected to NYSEF, the program, the history? I was never a NYSEF athlete. That said, as a coach being able to work with such a prestigious organization, has been game changing for me personally. When you look back at some of the people that have worked with or come out of these programs it’s daunting just to be a part of it. It has without a doubt raised the standard at our mountain not only for the athletes, but also for the coaches.
Anything else you would like to add? Super bummed that arguably the best part of our season got cancelled, but I am super stoked to get on the hill for the 20/21 season.
Head Alpine U16 Coach
Steve Mones is the Assistant U14 Coach at Belleayre. He also works as a civil engineer in N.J. When asked about coaching, Steve said, “after racing at Belleayre when I was young, I was drawn back by the opportunity to help grow the sport and support young athletes find the same enjoyment of being outside with friends that I did.” Steve’s favorite part of NYSEF and the ski community is the way like-minded people can come together over something they love. We love having you a part of our team, Steve!
Gore Mountain Staff
Gore Program Director
Gore Head U19 Coach
John's parents introduced him to skiing at an early age. He made his first turns at the ‘Highest Base Elevation Ski Area in New York State,’ Scotch Valley, and many subsquent trips throughout the Northeast and Europe instilled a lifelong love of the sport.
John competed in both ski racing and freestyle (all 3 events: aerials, moguls and ballet). Entering college, he focused on racing at NYSEF. This afforded him NJCAA All-American status. Adventure awaited him after college and in true ski bum fashion, he spent several seasons living in both Kitzbuhel and St. Anton, in the heart of the Austrian Alps, and in the Rockies, at Vail. While living in Colorado, he competed for many years on the World Pro Mogul Tour.
John returned to NYSEF in 2005 and has since coached J1/2’s, U-16’s and U-19’s. Holder of a USSA Level 300 coaching certificate, John’s goal is to make each athlete confident in their ability to ski anywhere, on any terrain, for the rest of their lives.

In his most recent position in Sun Valley, Smith coached both juniors and elite athletes as well as carefully developing and monitoring their annual training programs.

Stemp, who currently resides in Paul Smiths, NY, is excited to rejoin the NYSEF program – this time as a coach. “I am honored to return to the Adirondacks and to mentor the next generation of cross-country skiers within my home program,” she said.
During her time at NYSEF, Stemp trained alongside local Olympic athletes Lowell Bailey, Tim Burke and Annelies Cook. “We grew up in a unique community which helped foster a passion for skiing and created a path for personal success,” adds Stemp. During her time as a NYSEF athlete, Stemp assisted with the Bill Koch youth cross-country programs at the Dewey Mountain Recreation Center (Saranac Lake) and the Cascade XC Ski Center (Lake Placid). Upon graduating from Saranac Lake high school and NYSEF, Stemp competed at the collegiate level at the University of New Hampshire (UNH) where she majored in kinesiology with a focus in education. After college, she held various cross-country coaching roles while also pursuing her master’s degree in school counseling.
“Julianne’s experience as a high school and master’s ski coach combined with her terrific ability to connect with people will contribute greatly to the growth of our program,” Head Coach MacDowell said.
When Stemp is not coaching, she enjoys cycling throughout the Adirondacks and spending time with her family and dog Ozzie. Welcome back, Julianne !

Sophie is a former NYSEF athlete whose loves for snow and winter can be attested by a look in her closet, where you will find more sweaters, vests, long underwear and spandex than anything else. Born and raised in Keene Valley, she took to the Nordic trails as a young athlete. In high school, Sophie qualified for the USST J1 Scandinavian Cup Trip and posted multiple top 10 finishes at the USSA Junior National Championships, earning her All-American status. With her race experience and love of the mountains, Sophie brings a lot of enthusiasm to her coaching style. "In general my favorite coaching moments always seem to be when we go off the beaten path and groomed trails into the back-country, whether it is playing capture the flag or navigating the narrow trails to and from Avalanche Pass in the High Peaks" she reports.
Sophie is also part of the team at the Adirondack Chapter of The Nature Conservancy and The Adirondack Land Trust, working full time to protect her favorite playground.

Winter Term Director / U10-U12 Alpine Head Coach / Art Tutor
Born and raised in Leland, Michigan, Beatty grew up ski racing at Sugarloaf Mountain (in Michigan-- not to be confused with the less famous resort in Maine!) before migrating east, enrolling at Colby Sawyer College in New Hampshire. She was a dual-sport athlete (ski racing and softball- pitcher) and she competed for four seasons for the Chargers, captaining the Ski Team both her junior and senior years. After receiving a BS in Environmental Science and a BA in Art Education (K-12), Beatty moved on to coach a talented pack of U14 alpine athletes at Suicide Six in Vermont. She then took over the reins as Program Director at Suicide Six, a position she held for three years, before moving to the Okemo Mountain School, where she served as Head Women's Alpine Coach. After two seasons at Okemo, Beatty moved to the Green Mountain Valley School (GMVS) in Vermont, where she served as the Head Junior Alpine Coach and Assistant Director of the Sugarbush Ski Club in Warren, VT. Two years later, Beatty moved to Lake Placid, where she taught Art and served as Head Women's Alpine Coach at the National Sports Academy for three years, before assuming her position as Director of Development and U10-12 Alpine Head Coach at NYSEF. Beatty has recently transitioned out of Development Director and into Winter Term Program Director!
The most important aspect behind her move to NYSEF was all about the close-knit ski racing family in the Adirondacks: "Ski racing is all about community, and the support that's given to our area youth. There's such a sporting legacy in the Tri-Lakes Region, and everyone buys in to the philosophy of raising young athletes." On our youth alpine programs, Beatty notes, "The daily freeskiing opportunities here at Whiteface and Gore are by far more exciting and diverse than any place I've skied on the East Coast." So what does that mean for developing skiers? "Easy," says Schlueter, "our athletes never get bored, and they're always challenged. The fact that young racers can chase talented coaches around such a big, diverse on-snow playground means that we're building well rounded skiers with a great base that are simply excited to be out there, having fun. That's the secret to our athletic development-- fun!"
In her free time, Beatty enjoys being on, near or around the water or in the garden, or spending time with her family.

Welcome U16 Alpine Coach, Mike Gilbert to the team! Mike is from Glens Falls, N.Y. and has skied and coached at West Mountain located in Queensbury, NY. During his time at West, he held roles as U16/U19 Alpine Coach and also worked with U12 and U14 athletes. When he is not skiing, he coaches rowing in the warmer months. Before coaching at West, Mike went to UVM and graduated as a Biology major with a concentration in Exercise Science. His passion for coaching stems from his education and athletic careers in skiing and rowing.
“Mike brings experience, education and passion to our U16 group,” said Head U16 Alpine Coach at Whiteface, Patrick Purcell.
Patrick met Mike, as many coaches do, alongside a race course, “our chemistry jelled immediately, we had conversations about strength and conditioning and how they played an integral role in on-snow performance... we are psyched to have Mike with us,” added Patrick.
When asked about working with NYSEF, Mike said “I have always wanted to come up north, live in Lake Placid and join NYSEF.” A motivator to be a part of NYSEF is his son, Patrick, who will be joining the program as a full-time U16 athlete. When discussing working with Head Coach, Patrick Purcell, Mike said, “after meeting Patrick on the hill, we instantly hit it off and have parallel views of ski racing and fitness training.”
When Mike is not rowing or skiing, he is spending as much time outdoors with his family, children, Patrick (15) and Lilly (6) and his wife, Catherine.
Colden is no stranger to NYSEF being a part of the program since he was a U10 - “I remember having board member Art Lussi as my first coach,” he said. Colden lives in Plattsburgh, NY and trained with NYSEF every week before heading to Clarkson University.
At Clarkson he skied for 4 years on the alpine team - leading the team as a captain his senior
year. Colden graduated with an Engineering and Management Degree with minors in Math and Project Management. As part of his degree, there is an international component and Colden took full advantage - interning with Corporación Cultiva, a sustainability and environmental research group in Chile. Following his return to the states, he currently works at Point Au Roche State Park on the northwestern shore of Lake Champlain as part of the trail preservation and sustainability crew. “I skied at Whiteface my entire life, it is my home mountain and I am excited to come back in this new role as a coach,” Colden said.
When asked about his time as an athlete, he said, “NYSEF taught me how to balance my school work and training...my coaches were great communicators and I always knew what to expect when traveling to the mountain every day.” Colden is thrilled to be a positive influence within the U16 group and learn from seasoned coaches like Head U16 Coach, Patrick Purcell. “Patrick is a great force in the ski racing community, I feel so connected to the sport based on his overall knowledge of the industry...I cannot wait to meet the athletes,” he said.
“Colden’s knowledge of Whiteface alone is a huge resource - his familiarity with the trail system allows him to gauge the right experience and challenge the athletes. In addition, Colden’s recent ski racing experience makes him incredibly valuable - he can relate to all the challenging aspects that young athletes go through. Plus, his enthusiasm is off the charts - he will be a positive force in our group,” commented Patrick.
During Colden’s free time, he enjoys riding up (and especially down) the Whiteface toll road, mountain biking, hiking and camping and sometimes slows down with fishing.
Meet a new member of our coaching staff, Sarah Coombs! Sarah is joining the Whiteface Alpine and Winter Term staff as a U16 Coach and Dorm Parent. She is a 2019 graduate of Northwood School and is currently attending McGill University remotely. Sarah ski raced at Gore and Whiteface and is excited to be a part of NYSEF in a different capacity!
“The (NYSEF) connections I have made through both programs (at Gore and Whiteface) is huge and all of my teammates hold a very special place in my heart,” she said. When asked about her new position, she mentioned “I am so excited to share all of the support, help, and advice I received as an athlete with my U16 team and provide support during a strange time in the world.” When asked about what she is looking forward to as a coach, Sarah said, “I am looking forward to learning the aspects of coaching and skiing itself that I did not grasp as an athlete and hopefully spread awareness of the most important topics I am learning now as a coach.” When Sarah is not thinking about skiing or studying, she is rock climbing, playing tennis, golf and painting. In the summer, she is a zip line guide and is usually on the lake boating with friends and family. Welcome to the team, Sarah!
