Belleayre Mountain Staff
Belleayre Program Director
Shawn was motivated to start coaching because he loves to snowboard and the feeling of freedom on the mountain. What he likes most about snowsports is being outside and sharing the technical aspects of the sport with others especially his athletes! When Shawn is not riding, he enjoys spending time with family, hunting, fishing and hiking!
Head Alpine U14 Coach
FULL NAME: Kevin Vanblarcum
HOMETOWN: Shandaken , NY
Job title at NYSEF: Head U14 Coach NYSEF Belleayre
Additional job, not at NYSEF: brewer for Westkill brewery, deputy supervisor town of Shandaken and author.
Did you ski race, if so, where/when/why? I grew up skiing at Belleayre. My sister and I were on skis as soon as we could walk, and I think it was pretty much game over after that. I raced through high school and skied USSA for Belleayre until I was 16 before focusing on freestyle for a few years.
What motivated you to start coaching? I quit my job in 2013 and was trying to focus on things that made me happy. Skiing was it. I got a job coaching soccer for the local high school and applied to coach at Belleayre with current director, Jim Catalano. We talked for a while and I ended up working every day that season on snow. I couldn’t have told you that it would turn into a 7 year career– coaching in three different sports, but that’s life. I truly love it.
What do you like/love most about snowsports? The Snowsport culture? I think the culture is what I love most about snow sports. It’s bonding over a mutual love of waking up early and going outside to play in the snow. It’s people from all these different walks of life who get to the mountain early trying to get first chair, and hang out in the lodge to share how awesome their day was. As a kid who grew up skiing at Belleayre, I’ve always described it as family.
What do you like to do in the off season? During your free time? What hobbies do you have? I’m lucky enough to have most of my hobbies as jobs, brewing, writing, and skiing. In the off-season I try to get outdoors as much as I can. Whether that’s reading by the creek or skating around the reservoir. I also like archery. Particularly traditional re-curve. That’s kind of my off-season therapy. We have a range at the brewery so I shoot most days.
How do you feel connected to NYSEF, the program, the history? I was never a NYSEF athlete. That said, as a coach being able to work with such a prestigious organization, has been game changing for me personally. When you look back at some of the people that have worked with or come out of these programs it’s daunting just to be a part of it. It has without a doubt raised the standard at our mountain not only for the athletes, but also for the coaches.
Anything else you would like to add? Super bummed that arguably the best part of our season got cancelled, but I am super stoked to get on the hill for the 20/21 season.
Head Alpine U16 Coach
Steve Mones is the Assistant U14 Coach at Belleayre. He also works as a civil engineer in N.J. When asked about coaching, Steve said, “after racing at Belleayre when I was young, I was drawn back by the opportunity to help grow the sport and support young athletes find the same enjoyment of being outside with friends that I did.” Steve’s favorite part of NYSEF and the ski community is the way like-minded people can come together over something they love. We love having you a part of our team, Steve!

Gore Program Director
Gore Head U19 Coach
John's parents introduced him to skiing at an early age. He made his first turns at the ‘Highest Base Elevation Ski Area in New York State,’ Scotch Valley, and many subsquent trips throughout the Northeast and Europe instilled a lifelong love of the sport.
John competed in both ski racing and freestyle (all 3 events: aerials, moguls and ballet). Entering college, he focused on racing at NYSEF. This afforded him NJCAA All-American status. Adventure awaited him after college and in true ski bum fashion, he spent several seasons living in both Kitzbuhel and St. Anton, in the heart of the Austrian Alps, and in the Rockies, at Vail. While living in Colorado, he competed for many years on the World Pro Mogul Tour.
John returned to NYSEF in 2005 and has since coached J1/2’s, U-16’s and U-19’s. Holder of a USSA Level 300 coaching certificate, John’s goal is to make each athlete confident in their ability to ski anywhere, on any terrain, for the rest of their lives.

Sophie is a former NYSEF athlete whose loves for snow and winter can be attested by a look in her closet, where you will find more sweaters, vests, long underwear and spandex than anything else. Born and raised in Keene Valley, she took to the Nordic trails as a young athlete. In high school, Sophie qualified for the USST J1 Scandinavian Cup Trip and posted multiple top 10 finishes at the USSA Junior National Championships, earning her All-American status. With her race experience and love of the mountains, Sophie brings a lot of enthusiasm to her coaching style. "In general my favorite coaching moments always seem to be when we go off the beaten path and groomed trails into the back-country, whether it is playing capture the flag or navigating the narrow trails to and from Avalanche Pass in the High Peaks" she reports.
Sophie is also part of the team at the Adirondack Chapter of The Nature Conservancy and The Adirondack Land Trust, working full time to protect her favorite playground.
Ski Jumping & Nordic Combined Coach/ Winter Term Mathematics Tutor
Colin was born and raised in Lake Placid. Inspired by his older brother, he decided to give ski jumping a try at 5 years old. Years passed, and after graduating from National Sports Academy, Colin took a year off to try and pursue elite Nordic Combined skiing. Since then, he has competed in World Junior Championships, Continental Cup, and World Cup competitions. He also took some time to obtain his Bachelors in Mathematics from St. Michael's College, graduating in 2013. Whiteface Mountain Staff
Winter Term Director / U10-U12 Alpine Head Coach / Art Tutor
Born and raised in Leland, Michigan, Beatty grew up ski racing at Sugarloaf Mountain (in Michigan-- not to be confused with the less famous resort in Maine!) before migrating east, enrolling at Colby Sawyer College in New Hampshire. She was a dual-sport athlete (ski racing and softball- pitcher) and she competed for four seasons for the Chargers, captaining the Ski Team both her junior and senior years. After receiving a BS in Environmental Science and a BA in Art Education (K-12), Beatty moved on to coach a talented pack of U14 alpine athletes at Suicide Six in Vermont. She then took over the reins as Program Director at Suicide Six, a position she held for three years, before moving to the Okemo Mountain School, where she served as Head Women's Alpine Coach. After two seasons at Okemo, Beatty moved to the Green Mountain Valley School (GMVS) in Vermont, where she served as the Head Junior Alpine Coach and Assistant Director of the Sugarbush Ski Club in Warren, VT. Two years later, Beatty moved to Lake Placid, where she taught Art and served as Head Women's Alpine Coach at the National Sports Academy for three years, before assuming her position as Director of Development and U10-12 Alpine Head Coach at NYSEF. Beatty has recently transitioned out of Development Director and into Winter Term Program Director!
The most important aspect behind her move to NYSEF was all about the close-knit ski racing family in the Adirondacks: "Ski racing is all about community, and the support that's given to our area youth. There's such a sporting legacy in the Tri-Lakes Region, and everyone buys in to the philosophy of raising young athletes." On our youth alpine programs, Beatty notes, "The daily freeskiing opportunities here at Whiteface and Gore are by far more exciting and diverse than any place I've skied on the East Coast." So what does that mean for developing skiers? "Easy," says Schlueter, "our athletes never get bored, and they're always challenged. The fact that young racers can chase talented coaches around such a big, diverse on-snow playground means that we're building well rounded skiers with a great base that are simply excited to be out there, having fun. That's the secret to our athletic development-- fun!"
In her free time, Beatty enjoys being on, near or around the water or in the garden, or spending time with her family.

U14 Alpine Head Coach
Alpine Head Coach
Purcell, originally from Goshen, NY, grew up skiing at Holiday Mountain in Monticello, NY. He has served in a vast number of different positions throughout his coaching career, ranging from grassroots programs to coaching at the international level. After beginning his career at NYSEF and Northwood School, Purcell went on to serve as Head Coach at Burke Mountain Academy until he was called up to coach with the national team. He worked with both the U.S. Ski Team and the Canadian National Team at the Europa Cup level before returning to the junior level, serving as Head Women’s Coach at the Stratton Mountain School — a position he held for several years. He also was the Head Women’s Coach at Dartmouth College.
In 2006, Purcell decided to move his family west, where he was Head Alpine Coach at both the Park City Ski Team and Rowmark Ski Academy in Utah. In 2013, Purcell joined Team Duke USA to privately coach U.S. Ski Team member Hailey Duke. After nine years in the West, he decided that it was time to head back east, closer to home. Most recently, Purcell has worked as U16 Alpine Coach at the Green Mountain Valley School where he and his wife also served as dorm parents.
Purcell is excited to get settled in Lake Placid. “Returning to NYSEF culminates a 37 year journey back to where it all began,” stated Purcell. “I love the Adirondack Mountains and, more specifically, Whiteface Mountain. It’s rugged beauty makes for a perfect setting to nurture aspiring ski racers. It’s an ideal teacher, offering a variety of terrain-- the mountain does the talking.” On the subject of joining the team at NYSEF, Purcell “couldn’t be any happier. I am honored to serve the staff, parents and, most of all, the highly-motivated athletes.”
Now entering his 38th year of ski coaching, Purcell has seen many trends come and go, but the raw, athletic lessons which ski racing provides young athletes have remained a constant.
"I love to impart on my athletes why mountains exist. Ski racing is merely a facet or tentacle of what skiing as a whole offers. The 'academy mentality' is undeniably extreme-- it has its place, however, identifying with a broader idea, connecting with the bigness of skiing as a way to experience a mountain and nature while balancing athletic precision-- that's the big picture to me. Ski coaching has taught me to be creative, to problem solve and to regularly take things outside of the box--all life skills within the vehicle of sport. Ski racing is well thought of as a character engineering opportunity. It breeds independent, thoughtful and constructive evaluators and thinkers, as well as the absolute need to work hard. Good racers can endure the elements and reach into deeper, inner places that will become major life milestones."

When asked about her new position, she mentioned “I am so excited to share all of the support, help, and advice I received as an athlete with my U16 team and provide support during a strange time in the world.” When asked about what she is looking forward to as a coach, Sarah said, “I am looking forward to learning the aspects of coaching and skiing itself that I did not grasp as an athlete and hopefully spread awareness of the most important topics I am learning now as a coach.” When Sarah is not thinking about skiing or studying, she is rock climbing, playing tennis, golf and painting. In the summer, she is a zip line guide and is usually on the lake boating with friends and family. Welcome to the team, Sarah!

Freeride Program Director
On Snow Freeski Coach
NYSEF is excited to announce the hire of Gavin Fritz as our on snow full-time freeski coach at Whiteface. Gavin will work with NYSEF’s elite park skiers and develop training and competition plans for their success. Gavin, a NYSEF Winter Term alum, is “excited to learn from the seasoned coaches and maintain the values of the program.” Freeride Program Director, Mike Kirchner added, “Gavin set the precedent for the freeride Winter Term program as a freshman and I am thrilled to see his passion for the sport…like many NYSEF alums, he has a desire to give back and influence the next generation.” In the last year, Gavin has undergone certifications with the United States of America Snowboarding and Freeski Association (USASA) program and was named Head Judge for the local Adirondack series.
Born and raised in Plattsburgh, N.Y., Gavin attended National Sports Academy (NSA) in 8th grade and spent 4 years in the Winter Term Program (WT) beginning in 2013. At NYSEF, he “learned how to be more productive and build mental strength while developing a strong work ethic and independence,” Gavin said. In WT, he was able to continue to have the support of his coaches and was the “type of student that benefited from the one-on-one tutoring.”In 2017, he graduated from Plattsburgh High School and attended Clinton Community College where he earned his 2-year degree in Humanities and Social Sciences. Since his time as an athlete, Gavin always knew NYSEF was going to be a part of his future. Soon after graduation (in December 2019), he began working with NYSEF as a full-time coach.
While not coaching, he is playing flag football with his roommates in a local league and writing poetry.
Freeride Program Head Coach
A Lake Placid native and '05 graduate of the Northwood School, JP has been coaching with NYSEF since 2008. He loves Lake Placid, freestyle skiing, and coaching aspiring athletes. "Living here in Lake Placid allows me to do all three of those on a regular basis," he writes. "I'm so lucky."
An avid mountain biker and golfer, JP simply loves being active outdoors.
On coaching, JP believes that through hard work, the guidance of a coach, and the collaboration of teammates, the sky is the limit.
"From start to finish, it's important for athletes to remain grounded by the values of respect for the natural and logistical elements that have provided opportunities, and to show compassion for fellow teammates, coaches, officials, and competitors," JP writes.
"Incredible joy can be achieved through the never-ending pursuit of progress. Although winning may be fun, it is not the true reward, but rather, an award. An award commemorates the true reward, which is the best performance of a person’s strongest talents at any given moment."

Humanities Tutor
My first skiing was at Mt Whitney in Lake Placid in 1958 at age six, in rubber galoshes and bear-trap bindings! My sons skied there with NYSEF and the Lake Placid Ski Club just before it closed for good in the 1990s, one as a tele racer, and the other in cross-country. I ski back- and cross-country whenever I can and hope to continue it for many years. I’m more than lucky to be able to ski into the backcountry from my front door in Keene Valley.
I have a B.A with Honors in English from Kenyon College and a M.S. in Education from Wheelock College. I’ve taught in private and public schools across the country and here in the Adirondack region for thirty-five years and built environmental education into all of my classrooms. I’m involved in outdoor ed., in addition to my tutoring practice. I'm currently teaching about mountaintop fire towers (which made up the first New York State initiative to protect the Adirondack forest) and forest, farm, and watershed ecology. I write outdoor stories for Adirondack Life and The Adirondack Explorer, and I author a trail guide for The Adirondack Mountain Club.
We all love skiing and snowsports; let’s do all we can for our kiddos and our surroundings to ensure that the snow will keep falling!
