Day 1 Recap: Individual Freestyle

NYSEF Nordic and Mid-Atlantic Teams were led by Karl Schulz (UVM), who was named Junior National Champion for the 3rd year in a row, with a big win in the U20 boys 10 km freestyle race by 0.1 second! That is an extremely close race with finish time of 24:58.6 over Alaska’s Hunter Wonder. Scott Schulz had an impressive race in the U18 boys 10 km freestyle race, placing 5th. Lucy Hochschartner (SLU) finished 9th in the U20 girls 5 km freestyle race and Jackie Garso (SLU) earned her first All-American honor with a 10th place in the U18 girls race. NYSEF had 4 All-Americans for the day!

Day 2: Classic Sprints

Scott Schulz paced the day with a 2nd place finish in the U18 boys classic sprint! Karl Schulz (UVM) finished 7th (5th American) in the U20 boys race. Lucy Hochschartner (SLU), Bryce Hartman (UNH), Henry McGrew, James Flanigan and Kai Frantz all qualified for the sprint heats that day.

Day 3: Classic Individual

Karl Schulz (UVM) made it 3 for 3 with individual All-American honors for the week by grabbing a 9th place finish (7th American) in the U20 boys 15 km classic race. Lucy Hochschartner (SLU) skied strong for 10th place (9th American) in the U20 girls race and Henry McGrew raced to 10th place in the U18 boys classic event.

Day 4: Team Relay

Karl Schulz (UVM), Evan Carr (Williams College) and Bryce Hartman (UNH) put on great showing for the Mid-Atlantic Team by earning 4th in the U20 boys 3×3 km freestyle relay. It was a sprint finish and the boys finished 1 second off the podium! Scott Schulz, Henry McGrew and Mid-Atlantic athlete Nino Manzella teamed up to place 5th in the U18 boys relay with another sprint to finish 1 second off the podium and 0.1 second out of 4th. Everett Sapp, Ethan Wood and Royal McDonnell raced to 15th place in the U18 boys event. Lucy Hochschartner (SLU), Jackie Garso (SLU) and Dani Laird (SLU) skied strong to place 6th in the U20 girls relay. Unfortunately, the U16 boys relay team with NYSEF teammates James Flanigan, Kai Frantz and Jesse Izzo had to work their way back to the race field after a broken pole in leg one, ultimately placing 15th. Performances of the day go to both Schulz brothers who won their relay legs!
