Belleayre athletes during their unicorn season ending race!

Junior World Championships

Whiteface Winter Term alpine student-athlete Ariana H. competed in Junior World Championships at Panorama Ski Resort in Invermere, Canada. Ariana is a member of Team Portugal and just missed out on qualifying for the Beijing 2022 Olympic Games. She placed 56th in giant slalom, scoring 179.88 FIS points, and DNF’ed in slalom.

U10 Mini World Cup: Candy Edition

Whiteface alpine U10s had another Mini World Cup cup weekend in mid-March. This time it was a race to the first gate, followed by a cat-and-mouse chase down the course! There was candy on the line for winners, but sportsmanship and camaraderie paid off more than winning in the end!

Belleayre U10/12 Unicorn Race

Belleayre U10 and U12 alpine athletes competed in their third and last “Pre Race Prep Series” races, and their last home event of the season. The theme was “Fire Ski Fashun” and they came fully decked out in unicorn themed spring ski attire. While there were many smiles, there were even more improvements in ski skills from the beginning of this year.

U18 Alpine State Championships at Gore

Congratulations to Matthew M. of Gore who is the U18 overall state champion after winning both slalom and giant slalom, and placing 2nd in super-g at U18-SR Championships at Gore Mountain on March 11-13th! NYSEF/Northwood’s Hillary L. won the women’s super-g while Sarah B. was 3rd in both super-g and giant slalom.

Congratulations Coach Maris & Coach Kyle

Congratulations to our FIS Women’s and Men’s assistant coaches Maris and Kyle on their recent engagement! Kyle and Maris met through ski racing and came to NYSEF together last year. They were engaged on the shores of Lake Placid while on an afternoon walk at the Brewster Peninsula Nature Trails. Congrats and good luck!

U16 Alpine Eastern Regional Championships

Ten NYSEF alpine athletes qualified to compete at the Ronnie Berlack Grand Prix U16 Eastern Regional Championships at Burke Mountain. The event kicked off with super-g racing and Gavin E. dominated the competition, winning the race ahead of  teammate Bodhi B., who placed third. Their teammate Charlie H. placed 7th. Other top performances in GS came from Gavin E. who placed 8th, and Charlie H. in 15th. The final day of competition included slalom, where the top female was Cara D. in 13th. On the men’s side, Gavin E. placed 10th and Lincoln N. placed 14th. Gavin was second overall  qualifying for national championships with teammates Bodhi and Charlie.

NYSEF Athletes compete at Junior National XC Championships

Northwood/NYSEF student athletes Bella W. and Sophia K. competed at US Ski & Snowboard Junior National Cross Country Ski Championships in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Both girls competed in the 10k classic mass start, classic sprint, and the 5k freestyle. Bella placed 83rd, 79th, and 127th, while Sophia placed 49th, 35th, and 53rd respectively. Thank you to Ski Like a Girl ™ for assisting with their travel costs for this trip!

Belleayre Mogul Mash

Belleayre alpine and freeride athletes participated in one of the oldest running traditions at Belleayre Mountain, the spring Mogul Mash! Held on the historic Belleayre trail, NYSEF athletes had some SMASHING runs, impressing the judges and bringing home some hardware! A big shout out to our amazing parent cheering section, and congrats to Coach Kev, who won a medal in his age group!

NYSSRA Kandahar U12 Eastern Fundamentals at Whiteface

NYSEF hosted a slalom-focused U12 skills and fundamentals Kandahar festival, including a spring barbeque and cupcake party. On Saturday, athletes skied with Olympians, Andrew Weibrecht and Tommy Biesemeyer while participating in a vertical challenge, to see who could ski the most in one day.  On Sunday, athletes competed in a tall pole race and a slalom kombi.

Coach Maddie retires from biathlon competition

NYSEF biathlon coach and 2018 Olympian Maddie Phaneuf raced in the 7.5km sprint at 2022 US biathlon Nationals at Mt. Van Hoevenberg, capping off her professional career. Maddie began competing in biathlon in 2010 and joined the US biathlon national team in 2014. She placed 5th in Junior World Championships in 2016, and competed in World Championships in 2017 before being named to the 2018 Olympic Team. Maddie’s “retirement” plans include continuing to coach for NYSEF, and spending lots of time outside hiking and mountain biking with her dog, Honey.

Some of the NYSEF Junior Race Team headed to New Hampshire to compete in U16 Championships. Day one was a total snowstorm and day two brought cold and icy conditions. Despite tough conditions, this small but mighty team did a great job racing against the best in the Northeast! Top NYSEF performers included Forrest S. placing 37th in the 5k skate, Abigail V. and Raquelle L. placing 39th and 40th in the 1.2k skate sprint, and the team placing 24th out of 43 in the team relay.

Congratulations to head Men’s/Women’s FIS coach Jeremy Transue and his wife Olivia, Winter Term Academic Coordinator, on the birth of their third child! Vaeda Rose was born at 9:55am on 3/23/22. Both mom and baby are healthy and happy, and brothers Hunter and Steele are in love with their new sister!

Last FIS races of 2022

The last FIS races of the 21/22 ski season took place at Whiteface during the final week of March. Northwood School’s Liz C. placed 3rd for U18s in both GS races, and second overall (first for U18s!) in both slaloms. Other standout NYSEF performers included Kieran D., placing first and second for U18s in the two GS races, and Dom D., who placed second overall in the GS on Tuesday, winning the U18 division, and second for U18s in the SG on Monday.

U16s at Gore

A huge congrats to NYSEF/Northwood U16 alpine student-athlete Cole V-E. on a massive third place finish in super-g at Gore Mountain in the Eastern Regional Finals. What a way to finish the championship season! It was a three-way tie for third! Congrats Cole!

Nordic Combined Continental Cup

NYSEF Nordic athlete Tate F. had the top jump of the men's competition on Friday 3/25 at the Lake Placid FIS Nordic Combined Continental Cup scoring 121.7 points, and skiing his way to a 12th place finish. On Saturday, he had the fourth best jumps of the competition and skied his way to a 13th place finish. Great performance in front of a home crowd! Go Tate!

U14s at Sunday River

Great job to Winter Term, Lucas S. who placed 5th Overall and 3rd for Americans and Paul F. who placed 15th overall and 9th for Americans during the U14 CanAm GS at Sunday River, ME. Great work boys! More on this series can be found at www.skireg.com.

 

Skimeister 2022

Ready to have some fun with friends and family!? For the past 10 years at Whiteface, the season has wrapped up with a fun Skimeister race - consisting of a combined 3 runs– GS, Paneled SL & Ski Cross.  Families rummaged through their closets to find a creative costume and enjoy some sunshine on Saturday. USASA Championships in Copper, CO!

 

USASA Nationals have been hosted at Copper Mountain for over 10 years. With disciplines including halfpipe, cross, slopestyle, and alpine spanning across 12 days with 2,000 athletes, it is the largest snowboarding and freeskiing competition in the world. Congrats to Robbie S. who took 3rd on Sunday in the Boardercross (Junior Men class) at Copper with the 5th fastest time trial - he won every heat until the last one.

Celebrate Bike Season!
