U12s @ West
U12 alpine athletes from Whiteface and Gore competed in a paneled slalom at West Mountain this month! NYSEF’s top female finishers were Cecelia N. in 5th, Chloe B. in 6th, and Georgie L. in 8th. Top male finishers were Leland C. in 4th, Luke W. in 5th, and Francesco D. in 12th. Keep it up!
U16s @ Gore
NYSEF alpine athletes from Northwood, Winter Term, Whiteface, and Gore competed in GS races at Gore Mountain and threw down some fast runs, completing a sweep of the U16 podium! Congratulations to all of the racers and an honorable mention to Amanda Q. and Ava V. of NYSEF Gore for placing 4th overall and 4th for U16s respectively in the women’s race!
Rail jam @ Whiteface
Congrats to freeride, Gore athlete, Cooper M. who placed first in his FIRST ever USASA rail jam at Whiteface. The goal of USASA events is to promote the sports of snowboarding and free-skiing and to be fun for competitors of all ages and abilities. More on USASA events can be found through this link.

FIS Women on podium
Liz C. placed 2nd for U18s and 5th overall in the FIS Divisional SL race at Sugarbush in Vermont! In the second race, Liz placed second overall and 2nd for U18s, scoring her best race to date. We look forward to more fast skiing from the NYSEF/Northwood FIS Women!
U16s at Belleayre
Congrats to everyone who competed in the Sports Page Cup Slalom races at Belleayre! NYSEF athletes swept the boys podium and went 2-5 on the girls side!
Cross @ Gore
Congratulations to all of our freeride athletes from Belleayre, Gore, and Whiteface who participated in the USASA Adirondack Series bordercross and ski cross races at Gore over Martin Luther King weekend. The U14 alpine athletes competed in the Mud, Sweat, and Gears Slalom races at West Mountain! We had some great results! Some podiums from the boys: Paul F. placed 1st and Lucas S. placed 3rd. We cannot wait to see what they have in store for the rest of the season!

Big kudos to Gore alpine athlete, Amanda Q. for kicking off the holiday open SL events with a second place overall. Fellow Gore athlete, Matthew M. placed 3rd overall in the SL event as well!

Jumping Fundraiser: February 5 – On, February 5, the NYSEF Youth Jump Team will be doing their annual fundraiser to raise money for ski jumping equipment. NYSEF keeps a fleet of jumping equipment (boots, suits, skis) for our youth jumping program so athletes can be introduced to the sport and develop in a cost effective and safe way. We want each athlete to have at least 1 donor (grandparent, teacher, local community member, NYSEF Board Member, etc.) to pledge a dollar amount per meter jumped. The longest competition jump of the day will be the fundraiser. We encourage everyone to participate and have fun! Please register your donor and pledge amount per meter in this shared sheet. Minimum pledge per meter is $1.
XC Marathon Challenge: February 26 –On February 26, the NYSEF Devo XC Team is doing their second annual challenge to raise funds for the Dare To Dream Scholarship Fund which provides financial support to athletes pursuing snowsport competition with NYSEF, locally and nationally! Each athlete is looking for at least 1 donor to sponsor them in this challenge (grandparent, teacher, local community member, NYSEF Board Member, etc.) to pledge a dollar amount per kilometer skied on the Porter Loop at Van ho. More than 1 donor is recommended!
The Porter Loop is notorious for being a tough course and stretches 15 long KM – we ask you to join these athletes by supporting them with a pledge, cheering along the course or joining them on January 30! We encourage ALL devo athletes to participate and have fun! All donors and pledges should be included in this shared sheet. Minimum pledge per kilometer is $2.

Athlete of the month
Charlie Howe
Charlie is a second-year U16 alpine athlete in the NYSEF Winter Term Program at Whiteface. Originally from Holland, N.Y., Charlie has been a part of the Winter Term Program for 3 years. His home venue, Woods Valley, is a 15-minute drive from his home and he started his ski career at the age of 2 under the watchful eye of his parents.
At Gore last season, Charlie placed in the top 3, which gave him confidence moving into the 2021 - 2022 snowsport calendar year. When asked about his favorite discipline, Charlie notes, “I am best at GS but my favorite event is SL – it is more fun, fast-paced and technical.” During the Regional Performance Series (RPS) at Sugarbush earlier this season, Charlie was able to train and compete against the top U16’s in the East. At Sugarbush, he placed in the top 5 which demonstrated his perseverance despite challenging conditions. “I saw everyone falling ahead of me, so I knew I had to prepare myself to attack difficult terrain on the course,” notes Charlie on his RPS experience.
Winter Term has made a major difference in Charlie’s ski racing. “I can dedicate full-time to training, I have the support of the tutors to keep me up to speed with my academics, and I’ve met my closest friends,” he notes.
Head U16 Coach Patrick Purcell has noted considerable progress in Charlie’s skiing over the last 2 years. “Charlie understands the mechanics of skiing and uses his ski as a tool. He is becoming more consistent and has unlimited skill potential – he is one of the most talented skiers in our program.” More on Charlie can be found here.
Honoring Andrew Weibrecht
On January 2, we celebrated Andrew Weibrecht with the naming of the Andrew Weibrech Finish Arena at Whiteface and the Warhorse Chairlift. “I’m incredibly proud of growing up here and for having the privilege to represent Lake Placid and Whiteface,” said Weibrecht. “Whiteface, NYSEF and Lake Placid provided an environment where I had the opportunity to grow as an athlete and test the boundaries of possibility. It’s an honor to be part of the ongoing Lake Placid Olympic legacy."
freeride athlete, lemley early season sucess
NYSEF summer freeride athlete, Elizabeth L. made the 2021 U.S. Moguls Selections. Selections provides mogul skiers the opportunity to prove themselves on course and qualify for domestic World Cup starts. This year’s selections featured three events over a week of training and competitions. Elizabeth landed on the podium in all three events – placing 2nd in the first two moguls competitions and first in the dual moguls competition. In January, she posted four top-10 finishes at World Cup events held at Mt Tremblant, Quebec and Deer Valley, Utah.

Belleayre events upgrades
Over the last 2 years, NYSEF - Belleayre has made investments to our events venue including an upgraded timing system and the purchase and build-out of two storage containers to protect training and competition equipment and tools. This spring we plan to upgrade the finish, timing and events building located on Dot Nebel! More details coming soon!
NYSEF WINTER RAFFLE
NYSEF is asking each athlete to sell 10 raffle tickets to their family, friends and within their community. This is a great opportunity to talk about your love for skiing/riding and much more! This year the raffle purchases and tracking will be done ONLINE - please ask anyone purchasing a ticket to include the “ATHLETE NAME AND VENUE” in the field when purchasing their tickets ONLINE.
$10 for one ticket and $50 for six tickets
- Work Deposit: For athletes/families who sell 50 tickets or more, they will receive their full work deposit back.
- The athlete who sells the most tickets at either venue (Belleayre/ Gore/ Whiteface/Lake Placid) will be able to get $500 off their 2022/2023 Programming.
- All athletes who fulfill their commitment to sell at least 10 tickets will get their name in a drawing to WIN a piece of NYSEF gear (hat, buff, headbands, etc.) - we promise it will be AWESOME!

Biathlon Coach Maddie Travels To Alaska To Be A Guest Coach!
NYSEF alum, Kevin Drury earns silver in World Cup and a spot on the canadian olympic team!
Taken from www.globalnews.ca. Drury says his leg is fully healed and doesn’t slow him down, but he lost training days to rehabilitating it in 2021. His first pass down a ski cross course following the injury was a November training run in China.
“I was about 35 days behind the rest of my team,” Drury said. “I’ve just been trying to build back up to my top speed, build my confidence up on the track, finding balance in my aggression.
“It’s starting to trend in the right direction.” Germany’s Tobias Mueller was third. Drury was the only Canadian to reach a final Friday. The top two skiers in each elimination-round heat advance. After handily winning his quarterfinal, Drury outmuscled Bastien Midol of France in a semifinal turn to take second and move onto the four-man final.
“I felt him when he went inside on that last turn to what we call the GS section and I just kind of said to myself ‘no, I’m not backing off,”’ Drury said.
“I didn’t have the best starts today. We kind of knew coming in that there wasn’t going to be a lot of passing opportunities today just because of how quickly it went from turn to turn and how fast it was, but I somehow figured out a couple ways to get around a couple people in key situations.”

Success at ski jumping at an early age, came naturally. “If you see a picture of somebody ski jumping, they’re pretty much flat on their skis in the air, and that can be something that takes people a really long time to get,” he said. “I guess when I was just starting to be a little more fearless, I wasn’t afraid to get right on the skis, get aggressive, and just try to really fly.”
He credited his success to being coachable. In Lake Placid, he was originally coached by Andrew Bliss, Dave McCahill, and Larry Stone, followed by Colin Delaney.
