Mont Sainte-Anne, Quebec – The New York Ski Educational Foundation (NYSEF) Cross-Country team concluded their season at the 2007 Canadian Ski Nationals from March 18-25 in Mont Sainte-Anne, Quebec. NYSEF’s Sophie McClelland (Keene Valley, NY) had the top result with a second place finish in the 1.2 kilometer Classic Sprint Event in the Junior B (ages 16-17) division. NYSEF XC Girls earn All-American status at Junior OlympicsMidway, Utah – New York Ski Educational Foundation (NYSEF) cross-country skiing athletes’ Sophie McClelland, Megan McClelland and Jane McClelland, all from Keene Valley, NY, earned all All-American status by placing in the top of their age groups at the US Ski Association Junior Olympics hosted at the Olympic Venue of Soldier Hollow March 5-10.
Sophie McClelland placed 13th in the Junior 1 (ages 17-18) freestyle sprint. She topped her sprint performance with a 9th place finish in the 10-kilometer freestyle race and then followed it up with a 5th in the 5-kilometer classic event. Megan McClelland and Liza Goodwin (Keene, NY) also placed well in the sprint event finishing 23rd and 24th in the J1 class. Megan McClelland finished 29th in the freestyle race and 41st in the classic race. Liza Goodwin skied strong races to finish 49th and 32nd in the skate and classic races. The three teamed up for the relay event and skied into 15th place. Jane McClelland, skiing in the Junior 2 class (ages 14-15), finished 42nd in the sprint, 30th in the 5-kilometer freestyle race and skied an excellent race to finish 8th in the classic event.
Paige Devlin (Lake Placid, NY), skiing for the Lake Placid Ski Club, had her best result in the classic race finishing in 72nd place. Alyssa Devlin (Lake Placid, NY), also skiing for the LPSC, finished 26th in the freestyle race in the Older Junior class (ages 18-19). Willie Benzce (Tupper Lake, NY) skiing for Saranac Lake High School finished 66th in the skate race and 60th in the sprint and classic events in the Junior 2 class.
Keene Central School, represented by the three McClellands and Goodwin, finished 7th in the Roger Weston National High School Championship Cup girls’ standings. The individual races at the Junior Olympics are scored to rank the best high school teams in the country, which include public, private, prep schools and ski academies. Congratulations to our local athletes!
