NYSEF XC skiers place high at Eastern Cup Finals

Hanover/Plymouth, NH – The New York Ski Educational Foundation Cross-Country team continued to excel this past weekend at the New England Nordic Association’s Eastern Cup Finals. The Eastern Cup Finals represent the season finale in the highly-competitive New England race series, which includes members of the reigning national champion New England Junior Skiing Division and elite skiers from Eastern colleges.

 

Sophie McClelland (Keene Valley, NY), Megan McClelland (Keene Valley, NY) and Liza Goodwin (Keene, NY) finished in 4th, 8th and 9th overall at Saturday’s 5-kilometer freestyle race hosted by the Ford Sayre Ski Club of Hanover, NH. In the J2 (14-15 years old) category, Jane McClelland (Keene Valley, NY) finished 8th, while Elizabeth Izzo (Lake Placid, NY) and Danielle Lussi (Lake Placid, NY) skied into 17th and 25th place respectively. Peter Friere (National Sports Academy/Lake Placid, NY) finished 18th in the Older Junior class, while Copper Dodds (National Sports Academy/Hanover, NH) placed 26th in the J1(16-17 years old) division. Peter Frenette (Saranac Lake, NY) placed 25th in the J2 class. NYSEF Cross-country coach Margaret Maher commented that “The girls skied extremely well this weekend and it’s great to see 3 in the top 10 in such a competitive field. This really sets the stage as we head into our final weeks of preparation for US Junior Nationals in March”.

 

The action continued Sunday at the Holderness School in Plymouth, NH as Sophie McClelland, Megan McClelland and Liza Goodwin again skied into 3rd, 8th and 12th place overall in the 10-kilometer classic race. Jane McClelland and Elizabeth Izzo finished in 8th and 21st positions in the 5-kilometer classic race for J2 skiers. Pete Friere finished 27th in the OJ category.

 

The NYSEF program coaches over 350 athletes in Alpine skiing, Freestyle skiing, Snowboarding and the Nordic disciplines. The athletes range in age from children to young adults. Currently, there are athletes from the NYSEF program on the U.S. Ski Team for alpine skiing and Nordic combined, and the US Biathlon Team.

Local cross-country skiers qualify for US Junior Olympics

Old Forge, NY - The Mid-Atlantic Cross Country Division concluded its’ Junior Olympic Team selection races this past weekend at the Mid-Atlantic Junior Olympic Championships in Old Forge, NY. Megan McClelland claimed the top podium spot in the J1 (16-17 years old) classic race and topped the field by 2 minutes and 19 seconds in the 10-kilometer freestyle race. Teammate Liza Goodwin (Keene, NY) finished second in the classic race. Jane McClelland (Keene, NY) also skied into first place in the girls J2 (14-15 years old) classic and freestyle events. Willie Benzce (Tupper Lake, NY) was crowned the freestyle champion in the J2 boys division.

 

The Mid-Atlantic Cross Country Division team will travel to the 2002 Soldier Hollow Olympic Venue in Midway, Utah from March 3-11, 2007. The US Junior Olympic Cross-Country Skiing Championships represent the premier event for junior racers in the country. New York Ski Educational Foundation’s (NYSEF) Cross-Country Coach Margaret Maher has been named Head Coach of theMid-Atlantic Team for their championship trip.

Competitive field comes out for the NYSEF Harry Eldridge Memorial Race

Lake Placid, NY – The New York Ski Educational Foundation (NYSEF) hosted the annual Harry Eldridge Memorial Race at Mt. Van Hoevenberg Cross Country Center on January 27 & 28. Serving as a qualifier for the Mid-Atlantic Junior Olympic Team, Empire State Games and the New York State Ski Racing Association Championships, the two-day event had over 300 racers ages 5-66.

 

Saturday’s 7.5-kilometer Freestyle Race showcased excitement as the Junior Women swept the overall podium with Stratton Mountain School’s Parker Tyler (Peru, VT) taking the win over NYSEF’s Megan McClelland (Keene Valley, NY) by two seconds. Followed closely was Lauren Fritz (Middlebury, VT) of Middlebury College in 3rd and NYSEF’s Liza Goodwin (Keene, NY) in 4th overall. Burke Mountain Academy/Lake Placid Ski Club’s Alyssa Devlin (Lake Placid, NY) skied into 8th overall, while her sister Paige Devlin (Lake Placid, NY) finished 8th in the J1(16-17 years old) age group. NYSEF’s Jane McClelland and Elizabeth Izzo skied into 2nd and 15th in the J2(14-15 years old) class.

 

The Junior Men continued the young dominance as Burke Mountain Academy’s Kevin Cutts (Putney, VT) took the sprint finish over Honeoye Falls’ Robert Gardner (Mendon, VT) by a mere second. Stratton Mountain School’s Kyle Dewey (Weston, VT) completed the podium, just 14 seconds out of the lead. Pete Friere (Lake Placid, NY) skiing for NYSEF/NSA finished 9th overall and 5th for OJ Men aged 18-19. Also racing for NYSEF/NSA, Alex Madden (Saranac Lake, NY), Andy Moore (Lake Clear, NY) and Cooper Dodds (Hanover, NH) had strong finishes with 5th, 6th and 9th in the J1 (16-17 years old) class, respectively. NYSEF’s Colin Delaney (Lake Placid, NY) finished 4th in the J2 class, while Dean Woodhouse (Saranac Lake, NY) finished 16th. 

 

Sunday’s 10-kilometer Classic Competition again provided top finishes from the Junior Skiers. Lauren Fritz topped the Women’s field by 16 seconds over NYSEF’s Liza Goodwin, with Heidi Henkel (Brattleboro, VT) in 3rd. Megan McClelland finished 4th overall, while Alyssa Devlin and Paige Devlin followed in 8th and 10th place. Jane McClelland skied for the win in the 5-kilomter J2 girls race with teammate Elizabeth Izzo finishing 10th.

Kevin Cutts stood on top of the Men’s podium for the second day in a row, with Middlebury College’s Bryce Connery (Holderness, NH) and Dylan Pudiak (Fairport, NY) taking 2nd and 3rd overall in the 15-kilometer classic race. Pete Friere finished 6th in the OJ class, while Andy Moore took 9th in the J1 class. NYSEF’s Colin Delaney and Dean Woodhouse went 2nd and 10th in the J2 class.

 

Sunday afternoon also provided a Bill Koch race for the younger racers with Everett Sapp (Morrisonville, NY ), Aaron Huneck (Rexford, NY), and Cougar Smith (Keene Valley, NY) claiming the top 3 spots in the boys J5 race. The girls J5 podium included Caroline Dodd (Lake Placid, NY) in first with Sage Miller (Keene Valley, NY) and Lucy Hochschartner in 2nd and 3rd. Brian Halligan and Evan Greenber (Saranac Lake, NY) went 1-2 in the J4 boys race, while Maile Sapp (Moorisonville, NY) and Anna Izzo (Lake Placid, NY) went 1-2 in the J4 girls race. Joey Izzo (Lake Placid, NY) and Nate Cappone (Vermontville, NY) fought hard for top finishes in the boys J3 race. Micheal Halligan (Gansevoort, NY), Jesse Izzo (Lake Placid, NY), Martina Costanza (Saranac Lake, NY) and Laurel Miller (Keene Valley, NY) completed the Lollipop age group race.

NYSEF Cross Country Staff Margaret Maher, Matt Cook and Sean Burke would like to thank the Olympic Regional Development Authority crew at Mt. Van Hoevenberg and all the volunteers for making this event a success. There was a great turnout for this annual 2-day event and beautiful conditions made for excellent racing.
