Sophie McClelland qualifies for US Junior Scandinavian Cup Championship Team
Houghton, Michigan - The New York Ski Educational Foundation (NYSEF) Cross-Country Team just returned from the US National Cross Country Championships hosted by Michigan Tech University. Competitors from around the country, ranging from high school skiers to elite senior racers, converged in Houghton, Michigan for the highest-level of cross-country races of the season in the US. Limited snow and warm conditions did not stop local Adirondack athletes from strong performances against the nation’s top skiers.
NYSEF’s Sophie McClelland (Keene Valley, NY) lead the charge finishing 64th in the 5 kilometer classic race, 60th in the 10 kilometer freestyle race and 27th in the 1.3 kilometer sprint event. She was 9th in both the classic and freestyle races and 4th in the sprint for juniors aged 17-18. With these results, she qualified for the US Ski Team Junior Scandinavian Cup Championship Team heading to Ornskoldsvik, Sweden at the end of January. This team includes the top six skiers aged 17-18 from the United States.
Strong showings were also made by Megan McClelland (Keene Valley, NY) who placed 109th overall in the classic race, 87th in the freestyle race and 63rd in the sprint race. She was followed closely by Liza Goodwin (Keene, NY) in 112th, 154th and 99th place overall, respectively.
Also competing were local NYSEF Nordic Alumni, who are now skiing for college teams. Annalies Cook (Saranac Lake, NY) represented the University of Utah for a 34th in the classic race, 52nd in the freestyle race and 31st in the sprint race. Marlijne Cook (Saranac Lake, NY) skiing for the University of New Hampshire faired well with a 46th place finish in the classic sprint event. Matt McClelland (Keene Valley, NY) skiing for St. Lawrence University and Simon Thomas-Train (Keene Valley, NY) skiing for Middlebury College both had good races and finished among the top Eastern collegiate skiers.
NYSEF’s Cross-Country Team season continues this weekend when they travel to Rumford, Maine for New England Eastern Cup and Junior Olympic Qualifier races.
The NYSEF program coaches over 350 athletes in Alpine skiing, Freestyle skiing, Snowboarding and the Nordic disciplines. The athletes range in age from children to young adults. Currently, there are athletes from the NYSEF program on the U.S. Ski Team for alpine skiing and Nordic combined, and the US Biathlon Team.

Forêt Montmorency, Quebec - The New York Ski Educational Foundation (NYSEF) Cross-Country Comp Team opened their season this past weekend at the Coupe Atomic races held in Quebec. These are Quebec’s version of Junior Olympic Qualifiers with a strong field of junior to elite competitors.
NYSEF’s local athletes had strong showings in both the classic race on Saturday and fought hard though freezing rain during Sunday’s freestyle races. Pacing the way was Sophie McClelland (Keene Valley, NY), who placed 18th overall in the 7.5 km classic race and 12th overall in the 10km freestyle race. She was followed closely by teammate Megan McClelland (Keene Valley, NY) in 31st place and 18th, respectively. Liza Goodwin (Keene, NY) also faired well in the freestyle event for 29th place in the Open Elite Category. Jane McClelland (Keene Valley, NY), skiing up an age group, finished 7th in the 5km classic race. She again placed well on Sunday with a 6th place finish in the 14-15 year old age group. Teams from Vermont, New Hampshire, Ontario, New Brunswick and Quebec also attended the races.
NYSEF’s Cross-Country Comp Team continues training until they hit the road again January 1-7 when they travel to Houghton, Michigan for the US National Cross-Country Championships.
